Achievements & Contributions Highlights

  • Murphy Mondays, written by Jane Smith, is a children’s book about therapy dog Murphy and his handler Jane visiting at the Royal University Hospital (RUH) Emergency Department (ED) (September, 2018). Published with the support of a RUH Foundation HUG grant. All proceeds donated to the RUH ED and the SK St. John Ambulance (StJA) Therapy Dog program.
    Books are available for $13.99 from Jane, the RUH gift shop, the SJA offices, Bone and Biscuit Co., Lakeview Pharmacy, DriverWorks, Amazon, Indigo/Chapters/Coles, McNally Robinson, Prairie Unique (YXE airport), Western Development Museum gift shop, University of Saskatchewan book store, Floral Acres Garden Centre, and Main Street Music and Books (Humboldt). 
  • As a RUH ED therapy dog research team member, Jane and Murphy co-presented at the One Health Leadership Experience at the University of Saskatchewan. She also co-facilitated a workshop at the event. (August 25, 2018).
  •  Jane and Murphy received a St. John Ambulance Volunteer Award for providing support, comfort and love during the Humboldt Broncos tragedy and for valuable assistance rendered in the furtherance of the work of St. John Ambulance, Saskatchewan. (June 24, 2018).
  • Jane was a speaker on the Human Story at the University of Saskatchewan One Health community discussion, Working with Dogs in Human Services. (November 3, 2017).
  • Jane contributed two chapters about her volunteer experiences with Murphy the therapy dog in the book, Sharing The Love: The St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program. This book is available for purchase at the SK St. John Ambulance offices (2017).
  • Jane and Murphy the therapy dog co-presented a research poster at the University of Saskatchewan, 5th Annual Global Health Conference, organized by the College of Medicine, Division of Social Accountability. (October, 2016).
  • Jane and Murphy were awarded The Priory of Canada of The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem Priory Vote of Thanks. (2016).
  • Jane has spoken at various Saskatoon organization meetings about her work with Murphy the St. John Ambulance therapy dog, including at the Saskatchewan Polytechnic, the Kiwanis Club, the Meewasin Rotary Club, elementary schools & Investors Group. Jane was the Master of Ceremonies at the Royal University Hospital Foundation Donor Grand Rounds on the RUH pet visitation program. (2016 – present).
  • Jane is the Saskatchewan Health Authority and St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Team first point of contact/support for Saskatoon therapy dog hospital visiting sites. (2018 – present).

Jane and therapy dog Murphy participated in a study that measured the health outcomes of the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog program on older adults at a Saskatchewan Veterans Affairs Canada residence. The findings are available in a video.
